BREWERS' HUGE PROFITS
Mr. Alden, in the House of 'Commons recently asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he .was aware of tho inflated profits of the breweries and the liquor trade generally during the last year owing to the permission to increasetho price of intoxicating liquors, and what action lie proposed to take. Mr. Bonar Law said that he was awaro that high profits had recently been made by the liquor trade. These were subject to tho excess profits tax of 80 per cent. , . Mr. Clynes has supplied the following information regarding tho amount of grain, etc., used in brewing beer in tho first nine months of last yearMalt. Rice. Maize. Sugar.* . Bushels. Cwt. Cwt. . Cwt. 28,620,800 01,200 .0,200 1,013,700 •And its equivalents. During the year 16,133,800 standard barrels of beer were- brewed, and 18,54!),i% proof gallons of spirits retained for consumption. '
