SAVING- SURVIVORS FROM BURNING STEAMER. (Rec. May 28, 1.10 a.m.)
New York, May 27. The United States Navy Department relates a thrilling narrative of rescue from the sea and the flames of the survivors of tho steamer Florence, which was destroyed by an explosion in a Irencli port on April 17. After, tho explosion tho surrounding water was covered with a mass of )x>xes of smokeless powder, which were constantly exploding. The survivors dung to tho wreckage, but could not Teach the small boats, owing to their 'being jammed'by tho wreckage. The lifeboats were ablaze, while the motor-boat was' jammed and enveloped with flames. Haislip, commander of an American destroyer, despite tho danger of explosion and the terrific heat from the burning vessel, drovo through the flaming wreckage, rescuing thirty-four who otherwise would have beon doomed. The rescuers liavo been recommended for medals — Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
