It is reported that a new shipping company has been formed by Germans In Turkey called the Dcr.tsch-Tiirklseho HnndclsschiU'iihrt. In 1917 Denmark lost 129 ships, of &<M lons net, a"s a result of the war, bringing I heir losses from wnr risk to 215 ships, rf 223,733 tons grors irA VF ""■ tons net. As at the end of 191-1 the Danish inorcnntilo iloet totalled 562.000 tons wl. it will be 1 seen that the losses represent Sj per cont. of the pre-war tonnage. A few days' ago a, new recon for milcfc loading was niii'lc at y?w:-nrtli-. and resulted in all previous pcrforninncos being eclipsed. The Australian Steamships, Ltd.. Blcamer Period wan loaded with four c,ran"9. This is the first time in the history of the port that four cranes have been ueed simultaneously with one vessel,
three cranes being tho larprest number previously used. AH vessels, however, cannot talio Tour cranes simultaneously, owing to their construction. ,But the Period lent herself admirably to the experiment, and the result was the splendid record of 44C0 tons of conl loading in a little more than ten hours. She went under Nob. a, 9, 10, and 11 electric cranes, the first crane starting at 11.15 a.m., and tho fourth crane 15 minutes later, and the vessel completed loading at 9.35 tho same night. It wa3 on iy at t ] le CIK ( o f ] as t month that tho Huddart-Parker'B etcamer Moorahool, was given a record dispatch at Newcastle, but evidently the Period's loading beats the Jloorahool's. The newest shipyard on the Clyde is that of Messrs. Brys and Gylscn, the oldestablished Antwerp firm, whose original home is now iu German hands. The ilnn, which is now in London, took over tho sito at Whiteiuch formerly occupied by Messrs. John Heid and Co., and during the past year they have been actively engaged in increasing the numbers of British merchant vessels. Thpy have already launched Bcveral large shinn; and have a number of others in hand, and such is the speed with which they have-carried oux the actual work of building;, launching, and fitting that they arc now fully entitled to rank among the foremost British flrme in the industry. News from Oakland, dated March 24, states that a steamer of 11.700 tons, built for the United States Shipping Board, was launched at the Alanieda plant of the Bethlehem Shipbuilding' Company. Tho keel of the bi(» freighter was laid on December 3, 1917, thero having been 105 working days altogether in its construction, which in the opinion of the shipyard officials is a record for a vessel of this size. The new ship is 410 ft. in length, 56ft. wide, 41ft. dcen, and "will be cnulpned with triple-expansion engines developing 2600 horse-power.
