I The above club held its meeting on I Thursday evening under 'the presidency jof Mr. Cnoko. An excellent programme was provided, and carried ' out. First Miss D. Mason played a fine piano piece. This was followed by a song by Miss H. Mason. Bath were very well received. The rest of the evening was devoted to consideration of Victor Hugo and his works. The chief part in this was taken by Sites liakor, who gave a general account of that author's works nnd spoke of his style. She referred to his great work, "Lcs Miserables," and spoko of its showing Victor Hugo's groat sympathy for the poor. As nn example of his style she read an extract from "Notre Damo de Paris," describing the sound of the different church bells to be heard on a quiet evening all over Paris. Miss Baker then culled on -Miss Mead for an extract, from "Quatre-Vingt Treize." Miss Mend read in a very interesting manner a striking piece dealing with a r frigate in a, storm, where a cannon hud i»ot loose an-'; was dashing about threatening destruction to everything. After this Miss Baker referred to some of Hugo's poems, "Les Feuilles d'Automno" and "La Legende des Siecles," and rend .an extract, "L'lnt'ante." Mr.' Halhani was then called on, and he gave, a touching piece dealing with three motherless children in a fortress. Mr. Balham read an amusing piece, "The Country House," by way of contrast to Hugo's writings, and Madamo Dechanet M'lntosh went back to Hugo and read several of his poems. On tint motion of the chairman a hearly vole of thanks to Miss Jiaker and the others who had contributed to the evening's entertainment was carried by acclamation. The "Marseillaise" was again sung nt the close.
