THE TURF

THE WANGANUI MEETING. The weather is still bad here, telegraphs our special correspondent at Wnngauui, and tile going will not bo improved for to-day's racing. The fields are again lurgo, and as tho course will be in a bad state there may be several surprises during the day. The open sprint race is the first event. Form Up, who is now owned by a Wellington sportsman, havinij boon purchased yesterday, is again at the head of the handicap, but though ho finished well in fourth place on Thursday it was probably more- a case of ''running past a lot of beaten horses, and he does not. look likely lo reverse positions with Lady General, for one. Deeley's mount got a very bad passage over tho first portion of the Borough Jiandicap, and she may be more lortunato to-day. Ooolpan is another Lorao that was unlucky on Thursday. Winning Shot is again an acceptor for the hack event, and on her first day's form must bo difficult to dispose of. Tho smaller field will suit tho one-eyed Lord Nelson, who finished at n great pnco on Thursday, while a fresh horse is Koutoa Camp, who gets tho apprentice allowance. Master Strowan is not to he a runner in the big Steeplechase. It is now reported that he will not race again until the Wellington Mectiug. Bore is too now at the business, and he, Marton, and Dlavolo may boat each other. Arlington ran a sterling raee on the first day, and if he will repeat it to-day he appears to possess a great ohauoe. Ho will race in this event and not in the Hurdles. The Hack Kurdlcs has drawn a good field, and there are several freeh horses engaged. Gang Awa , should be a lot better horse for his race on Thursday, aud as Golden Glade will start in the Open Hurdles the Fordell representative may go out favourite. l'ursefiller will be at a short price in the May Hurdles, and she mav encounter most opposition from Golden Glade. Colorado's form on Thursday was very bad, and as ho eeeuia unable to act in the going his owner may decide to leave him in his box to-day. Volo has been raised I2lb. for his win on Thursday, and Hydrus, who was unlucky in the Connolly Handicap., may reverse positions with him in the Empire Handicap to-day. Eude will also bo well supported. Ibex has been sold to an Auckland buyer, and is not likely to start. Ho goes into J. Lambeth's stables. Turangapito also goes to Ellorslie, and will in future be trained by J.. Sharpe. In tho absence of the top-weight Mill Queen may show up, as the distance will suit her better Ihan on the opening day.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

rBY. GMNCOK.I

In the north, Almo is fancied for tho Oreat Northern Hurdles. On the strength of a good gallop at Eiccarton, Tremcna was made favourite for tie chief event at the North Otago Meeting on Thursday, even in face of the good performances which stood to tho oredit of Mohawk. Mohawk conceded Tremena eleven pounds, and carried off tho stake. Flash Lady is already at Ellerslie to fulfil her engagement in the Cornwall Handicap. ■ Hymcona is said to be flying in his work up north. There are favourable reports about Oanlrona also. Battlo Eve is again in work at Eiccarton, Don Francisco's injured foot ie nicndine, aud he is doing light work. At Ellerslie this week Hopye, Hautere, Moddite, John Bunny, King's Park, aud Dunrobin were sent for a school in company over the big fences. Hopye and Hautere were In front all the way, finishing in close order, about four lengths In front of Moddite, with John Bunny and King's Tai'k following. Dunrobin came to grief at tlie wall turning into the straight. He was afterwards -remounted, and got over the remaining obstacles in safety, but his jumping wae slow. Hopye was limping badly on being pulled un, but gradually threw oil his lameness. On the same morning, Thrace defeated Wartime and Dancaster over five flights of hurdles, and Swastika showed to more advantage than Campfire Jack in a Bimilat task. i Word comes from the Waikato that Bonnie Jean is in great heart to-complete her steeplechase engagement at Ellerslie. It. Tapp has been engaged to rido her. Gloaming, the two-year-old gelding by Tho Welkin—Light, showed a lot of speed whou iirst tried early last season, but ho went amiss. Since B. J. Ifason brought him in-again, he.has been going along nicely, and ho showed plenty of dash in s tlirce-l'urlong sprint on Tuesday. The Solferino—Anltea colt, which is the only yearliug E. J. Mason has in active work at present, hag got through some useful tasks, lie handles himself well in short sprints, and gives promise of developing Into a useful sort. The present racing season has been a most remarkable onu, because where niaiiv looked for disaster and a dead slump In raoing, quite the contrary has proved the case (says an Otago writer). Fields throughout the season have been maintained to such a numerical strength that it is obvious qr.ito as many, if not more, horses are in training as in any other previous racing year, and this notwithstanding tlie high price of hor6C feed aud the increase in tho cost of running. Money Iβ plentiful, despite the high cost of living and the extra calls on i/hc pocket which have to be heard ns a plain duty, which it is pleasing to record is, as a general rule, liberally responded to by sportsmen, of whom quito a number have made substantial donations to the various patriotic funds. Several have donated handsome stakes won by their horses, and no doubt others will continue to follow such a sportsmanlike lead. It must be said however, in passing, that owners of trotters and pacers do not seem to have made themselves very conspicuous with donations of stakes won bv their horses Per haps they do their Rood work without drawing public attention to tho matter but in the interests of the sport a little publiciy would bo quite permissible and pardonable. A;) far as Uirht harness racing is concerned, evidence is erowiiiK stronger and stronger as to its undoubted popularity with the public, and like the parent nport has become recognised as not only a national pastime, but also n great national industry.
