The wiunor is very green yet and will do better later on. Idealism was very sore after the fall.

As was the case twelve months ago tho -ri?„ B^=f. lechase Provided a Bplcndid race, hi™ be p ttI 1?,. was \ er y w We. tho favourite SL? oall M? n ' Wlth Dt aoburri second in demand. All started but Golden Glow, Vn? ~ B ? n , e ,F°2 S Arlington, Marton, and Bore led tho field for n mile, where the last-named got rid of his rider. Mar-, ton then went out by himself and the held was whipped by 'I'hc Chief. All were | jumping well, and the race was a pretty one lulh a mile to go Braeburu rau to Marton, and at tho six furlongs went out by himself, with Marton, Arlington, and iiaster Strowau in that order. Tho last-named moved up at the bend and jumped tho last fence on terms with Braerfl" h 5 two theu settled down for tho nnleh, and after u great struggle Braeburu beat the top-weight by a head. Marlon was four lengths away, and then came Coalition, bandy Paul, Arlington, and Uluepot, The winner had tho advantage of ft couple of races nt Hastings, and Uub stood to him at tho critical stage. Master Strowan is now a hot order for the Great Northern Steeples. St. Elmn has gone wron;- and will not be there, and

Hraebum wns taken out of the race some time back. Coalition gave a very disappointing display to-day, and so did Gluepot, neither of the pair over threatening danger. Bore is not likely to see the post and will probably be started in the Maidun Steeples. Braeburn has a great record in the Wanganui Steeplechase, having been first twice and second once out of threo starts. ' There vaa little to ohooso between Gold Fran and Paul Moore for tho position of favounto in the Hack Hurdles, while Gang Awn, was also well backed. Dingle made tho early running, with Midnight Star in the rear. With a mile to go ! Kauri King, Undecided and l'aul Moore were prominent and racing down the back Gold Fran and Gang Awa' were moving up. With three furlongs to go Midnight btar took charge and,was not again headed. Gold Fran finished well and Beat Paul Moore, and thon came ffaioturo, Gang Awa', Jui Jitsu and Kauri King.

All the acceptors paraded for the Century Hurdles, Sir Fisher being a slightly better favourite than Colorado and Pursetiller, who were evenly bucked. The lastnamed made play for a mile and threequarters with the others handy, but at this stage she gave way to Golden «low and Sir Fisher. The last-named juinpei. tliu last fence in front, uud holding on Collector/he won by live-lengths. Golden Glade was third and then came Styrax, Colorado, and Vacuum. The winner stayed on well, and on his showing to-day will be very hard to dispose of at fillerslie. Colorado cannot stay and can be written out nt Eilerslie, as can Purseflller. Collector ran a really good ruco and may be troublesome to Master Strowan in the Northern Steeplechase. Hydrua was at the shortest price in the Connolly Handicap. After one break away, the held was sent of! to a straggling start. Hushman and Moutoa Queen led, with Welcome Nugget tailed off. At the half mile Volo took chargo and he was several lengths clear as the field swept into the straight. Hero Hydrus, who had got away badly, appeared, and uuly Louisa, favoured by a good run on the fence, also put in a claim. Volo won nicely, while Lady Louisa beat HydniM by a .head. Zola was fourth. The winner acted well in the heavy goiug and must have had a chance in the Cornwall Handipap had ho been entered. Ho was In at'Otaki, but his owner missed the acceptances.

Heavy ram fell just prior to the start of the concluding handicap, and the race was run in a Jdinding shower. Rude was a good favourite, but lie hacked out <is

the tnpes roso and lost a lot of ground. Sardinia. Paddinirton Green, and Winning phot were prominent for six furlongs when Winning Shot, went on alone. The favourite made, up his ground rapidly, hut tho effort told and ho faded in the straight. Winning Shot had to he shaken up at the finish to stall on Lord Nelson who finished very fast, Glucian was a head in front of the favourite.

The totalisator handled £34.735, acainst £26,769 on tho first day Inst year. DETAILED RESULTS. By Telegraph-l'ress Association. BOROUGH HANDICAP, of 275 sovs. Six furlongs. 1 Galore, 6st. 71b (F. NOTES AND COMMENTS

fBY GLENCOE.I

I The number of horses engaged in the Great Northern Hurdlo Race was reduced on Tuesday by the withdrawal of Harbour Light and Iceberg, both being struck'out at 12.10 p.m. Kirkby (L. Hagerty), Art (W. Bush), VasLUlar (!•'. Gray), and Wellwood (Jl'Mullan) vcrc associated in a round of the steeplechase fences. Wellwood was the first to clear the initial obstacle, but he was in the roar when they had reached the brush double. Hero Vascular lost his rider, and, after jumping the double, Wellwood was eased up. Once over the sod wall, Kirkby had a good lead from Art, who set sail after him, but at the post and rails the latter ra.i off, leaving Kirkb" to finish by himself. Vascular was remounted, and, starting off from tho brush double, went another round with Wellwood, Art joining in after" they had jumped tho sod wall. Art refused again at the post and rails, and coming to the second of the brush doubles, Vascular ran off. Altogether it was a very poor display on the part of all but Kirkby. F. Christmas galloped Kiljoy late on Saturday, and Die Kilbroney maro went so badly, and showed so pointedly that she -was still suffering from tho kick Slogan gave hor on the cvo of the Oainaru Meeting, that is decided to let the marc and Slogan drop out of their engagements at the Dunedin Winter Meeting. Fiery Cross is on the tracks again at Itlccarton, but is doing light tasks. Turpcuito has been put over the hurdles at Awapuni and has given a fairly satisfactory display.

It. is reported that Mr. D. Holland has leased JUraa from Mr. Kail). :

The Duncdin Winter Meeting is to commence at 11.15 and the lust event is timed for 4.15. Once there uns ,111 uctly accident at a winter meeting, rim in the dusk. Ulvit falling and giving J. M'C'ombc a nasty spill. \ Gaziqnc will not he taken to-the Auckland Meeting, hut it is expected that he will race nt Gisboruc next month.
