Mr. George A. Elmslie, leader of tho Victorian Parliamentary Labour Party, died on May 11, at the ago of 57 years. Ha had long been in indifferent health. Injuries to the ribs caused by a fall and tho cliects of u recent wetting brought on complications that forced him to ta.ko to his bed. Mr. Elmslio leaves a widow, who is seriously ill, and one son, Mr. 11. Elmslio, an irrigation farmer of Bamawin, noar Rochester (Victoria). Captain Joseph K. Venables, M.(J. (died of wounds), was the fourth son of the late Mr. Joseph Venables, of Christchurch, and was born in that city thirtyfive years ago. In 1909 ho went Home, to study medicino under Ihe Edinburgh Medical Mission, and tho idea of Inking up foreign mission work. After qualifying, ho came out aB surgeon on. an emigrant ship to Brisbane. Going on In Christchurch, ho acted as locum tcfiens for several city practitioners, apd for six months hold a post on tho resiaent staff of tho hospital. Thon he volunteered, and left with tho Eighteenth Bcinforcomenls. Ho was three months in Egypt, and thereafter with various ' battalions in France. Captain Venables was awarded tho Military Cross in Juno last. In ■November he was married to Miss M. B. Gorrie, of Edinburgh. Tho resignation or Dr. A. E. Couzens as honorary physician to the Children's Hospital was yesterday accepted by the Hospital Board with regret, and tho thanks of tho board were tendered Dr. Couzens for tho skill and attention ho had at nil times bestowed during tho term .)f his appointment. Tho death occurred at Nurso Lucas's Private Hospital at an early hour yesterday morning of Mr. R. J. Dauby. Mr. Bunby entered tho hospital on Tuesday to undergo a serious operation. Ho was well known throughout tho North < Island, having represented the late J. G. Dulf, of Christchurch, for about eight years, and eighteen months ago ho joined tho firm ot W. E. Kirker, Ltd.
Tho lato Corporal Thomas Inward, of the Camp Quartermaster's Staff, Trenthara, who died at tho Trentham Military Hospital on Tuesday, was accorded a military funeral yesterday. The Trentham Military Band was in attendance, and Lieutenant Worth represented tho military authorities A firing party was also provided by tho camp. Chaplain Taylor officiated at tho graveside.
Advice has been received that Private H. Aitken, son of Mr. J. G. Aitken, or Erankton, has recently been awarded tho Military Cross. Private Aitken, who is ono of three brothers on active service, left with Iho Ambulance Corps of the Seventh Reinforcements. Ho has not had a day's illness since ho left. Previous to enlisting ho was in. the legal, oihco of Messrs. Watt, Hunt, and Armstrong, of Hamilton. His brothers left with tho Tenth and Thirteenth Jteinforoeinents respectively.
Mr. J. B. Merrett (Christchurch) intends to leave shortly on a visit to Sydney.
