SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS
ANNUAL CONFERENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, May 22. The .annual conference of New Zealand secondary school teachers opened, to-day, Mr. W. J. Morrell (Otago Boys* High School) presiding. In his address, Mi'. Morrell said that as secondary teachers they must resist the tendency to undue centralisation. In proportion as their bondage to Wellington increased, their labours would bocomo less spontaneous and inspiring. Meanwhile they,must improve the quality of their own services, but this they would never do 60 long as teaching was so illpaid and Tolatively so little honoured, i-ocially there were hopeful signs, however, as interest in education was increasing. Mr. T. D. Penrce (Invercargill) was elected president, and Miss Nancy Jobson (Invercargill) secretary and treasurer. ' (
It was resolved to recommend thflj; any candidate for matriculation who does not produce a satisfactory certificnte that ho has passed through a three-years' course of work, including practical' w.ork, at p. secondary school or its equivalent, in oua of the subjects prescribed for matriculation, bo irKiuired to pass in 6ix subjects.
