In addition, an opportunity will be given people who. collect rare ferns of securing specimens of the beautiful "horse-hoof or Kin? ferns, as Mrs Preston has had some or tho roots sent down to her from Waihi. Such an opportunity is one not to be neglected, as these ferns are somewhat hard to secure in Wellington and are extromoly ornamental A very good day is looked for, as the Division is well known for the excellence of its provisions. Mrs.. Gaby, will be in charge. Women's National Reserve of N.Z, The annunl meeting of tho AV.N.R. Rifle Club was held on Thursday evening. Mrs. Porter (hon. organising secretary) presided. The work of the year was reviewed, and votes of thanks passed to the instructors, to tho Y.M.C.A. for use of range, and others who bad helped to further the work of the club. The balance-sheet was passed and adopted. Miss Cuningham, delegate to the Miniature Rifle Association, gave a most interesting account of tho rules and tho •work of the association, proving the Rreat advantage gained by joining, the hforty co-operation of the association being a great support to the club. A number of matches are to take place in the near future. Tho greatest interest is being taken in the competition for tho beautiful rose bowl presented by Mr. Osmond. The following were elected:— President, Mrs. Porter; hon. joint secretaries, Misses Anderson and Hogg: hon. ! treasurer, Miss Bridson; captains, Missss Jenkins and Anderson; committee, liestlnines Sommerville, O'Sullivan, Morrnh, and Rigg, Misses Jenkins and Coningliam.
Dance in the Alexandra Hall. I A very successful private dance was organised and held in tho Alexandra Hall, Abel Smith Street, last evening, by the committee of the -Kirkcaldio and Stains Social Club. There was a. large attendance of members nnd their friends, and, the chilliness of the evening made dancing-a greater pleasure than usual. The hall had been. elaborately draped with red, blue, und white drapery, tho results secured being most effective, and. in the supper-room tho tables were arranged with chrysanthemums and other flowers'in season. Cowley's Orchestra supplied delightful • music for the dancing. Tho committee responsible for tho arrangements ' consisted of tho Misses Traillo, Copoland, Strnbant, Leo, Eankin, Baker, English. Afellnr, and Kuthert'ord, and Messrs. Hill, 11. Smith, and J. Blo.thnin, hon. secretary. Tho decorations were carried out by Mr. AVnlsh, tho firm's window-dresser, and the supper arrangements were in the hands of Mrs. Oscar Johnston. The proceeds resulting from the dance are to be handed over lo the Mutual. A jumble sale is to be. held in St. Peter's Mission Hall in Tnranaki Street, on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Martin, the organiser, lies been fortunate in securing a very good variety of, women's clothing, as well as men's and children's, to say nothing of boots and shoes. In addition tlioro will be pictures, glass, and cliinaware, so that people in search of bargains should fiiijl much that is serviceable and at tho same timo exceedingly reasonable at this sale. ■ The funds resulting from Saturday's effort are in aid of the Northland baby's candidature. , Tlie ladies of tho Berhamporc branch of the Women's National lieserve, under Mrs. Hopkirk, entertained the wives and families of soldiers and. sailors at the club on Friday afternoon. The musical items by Miss Grant, Mcsdnmes Chapman, and Eggie were greatly enjoyed. I'lie singing of the National Anthem brought a' very happy iifternoon to a close. The next Patriotic Shop Day in Mangaweka will be held on June 7. Tho proceeds will be equally divided between tho lied Cross and the Itoyal Flying Corps Hospital for the Blind. It' appears there has been a certain difficulty experienced in equipping a hospital for our airmen who have lost their sight in the service of tho Empire. As there are numerous New Zealandeis in the lloynl Flying Corps as well as those from Hie Motherland they too will benefit by the hospital. There was an overflowing audience at tho itiatinee arranged by Messrs. Fuller Blrathers yajtowlny afternoon for the benefit of the l'ross baby, and many people were unable to sccurq seats. Entertainment For tho Plunket Baby. Yesterday eveuing a very enjoyable entertainment was given at the residence of Iho Hon. G. W. Russell and Mrs. Russell lu Molcsworth Street, in aid of the Plunket baby. There was a very large gathering of friends nnd thoso interested in the campaign, and as the entertainment comprised both music and dancing those present were able to choose their own particular form of amusement. The dining and drawing-roams, with the folding doors between thrown opeji made an excellent concert room, and the programme, which had been arranged for the occasion, mot with great appreciation. Contributing to tho programme wore Mr. Foster, with pianoforte solos, Miss '.Fuller, Miss Cruickshank, and Mr. O'Connor, with songs; Mr. Watkins, Mrs.' Morgan, nnd Mr. Watson, instrumental trio (violin, 'cello, and piano)-; Miss Buttier,.and Dr. Hay, recitations; and Mrs. Morgan, pianoforte solo. The Hon. 0. W. PLiissell and Sirs. Russell received, and the two rooms in which the concert was held were decorated with flowers, palms', and other pot plants. Tho dance for young peoplo was hold ,in what hud been the billia,rd-room, in another part of the house. Excellent music was provided, and a thoroughly pleasant evening passed by everyone present. The decorations of tho supper table were of vivid scarlet flowers,, nnd maidenhair fern. Among those who were present wero Mrs. W. F. Massey and Miss Massey, Mrs, Montgomery, Mrs. nnd the. Mrs. Kussell was assisted by her (laughters in entertaining her guests, and as. a result of tho entertainment it is anticipated that the Plunket baby should benefit materially in the contest. There was a very largo attendance of soldiers at the weekly dunce teld at the Sydney Street Soldiers Club last evening, in spite of the many counter-attrac-tions that .were taking plaeu elsewnere. Mrs. Muss and Mrs. Bristow were the hostesses iu the tearoom, and ull other arrangements were carried out as usual. Mrs. \V. I l '. Massey (president} was present for part of the evening. The Misses Edgerton (Auckland) aro guests of Mrs. Hope-Lewis. Tickets for tho lied Cross 'o,vt union, the prizes for which have been given by Messrs. Stewart, Dawson and Co., Ltd., aro meeting with a large demand. The first prize, the ..beautiful oak cabinet, valued at .CG5,' has becti greatly admired, and the winner, will be (in extreinelyi fortunate person. The secoud prize is a diamond nnd ruby ring, tlio third a electroplate pickle stand, the fourth a silver wristlet watch. The remaining prizes include a cut-glnss claret jug, a tablo gong, and electro-plate card tray,' a china fruit dish, and electro-plate'ink-well, n pot-pourri vase, etc. The art union is to be drawn on August .1, and tickots (ono shilling each) may be obtained on receipt, of a stamped addressed envelope with the amount enclosed either from Messrs.
