"OUR CONSCIENCE IS CLEAR"
PRESIDENT WILSON ON WAR AIMS "THE ROOT OF THE MATTER" Now York, May 20. President 'Wilson, in tho course of his speech at tho lied Cross meeting, said:— "We are not to be diverted from our given purpose of winning tlio war by any insincere approaches upon the subject of peace. I can say with a clear conficienco that I have tested those intimations, and found them insincere. I now reeogniso them for what they are—an opportunity to have a freo bund, particularly in the East, to carry but the purpose of conquest and exploitation. Every proposal with regard to accommodation 'in the West involves a reservation in regard to tho East. I therefore intend to stand by Russia as well as by France. If Germany thinks wo aro goins; to sacrifice anybody for our own sake, I tell Lev now that sho is mistaken, for tiin glory of this war, eo fnr as wo are concerned, is that it is, perhaps for tho first time in history, an unselfish war. Ii blio wishes for poacc, let hor come forward through accredited represontatives, and lay her terms on tho table, whero we have laid ours. She knows what they are." President Wileon.eulo-. giscd tho work of the great Red Cros3 organisation, which was recognised by international agreement and treaty. One of the deepest'stains on tho reputation of the German Army was that it, had not respected the Red Cross. That goes to tho root of the matter. The Germans have not respected the instrumentality of mercy and succour which they- participated in setting np as an expression of human-ity."—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn-Routcr.
