OISTR'CT REPORTS. (From Our Special Correspondents.) Featherston, May 18.-Ohi]ly morning. Conditions continue-, with bright dnye. A lantern lecture on the subject of "Bypaths in Evolution" vae delivered in tho Alexandra Hnll Inst night by Ur> J. Bowden, under tho auspices of tho AVellington Social Democratic Party. The lecturer, who showed somo interesV ing pictures, discussed various strange forms of animal life that havo existed on tho earth in past ages, and that havo been swept away by changed conditions or successful rivals. On behalf of the Wellington Y.M.C.A. tho soldiers who returned home on Saturday afternoon were welcomed by Mr. A. J!. Smith, acting-genoral secretary. A number were entertained at the rooms in Willis Street before proceeding by tho south boat. The Camp Commandant at 'J'rentham acknowledges receipt of 500 volumes of literature presented by Mies Rothonberg. These havo been placed in tho Church of England Institute Library. Also a parcel of papere from Mr. 11. Whitehead, Thames, which have been distributed in [ camp. The Commandant also acknowledges the following gifts to tho Camp Band:—Prom Mr. H. E. Hoslciiiff, Salvation Army Adjutant, caso of fruit; from Messrs. Chns. Bcgg and Co., Ltd., music. The "Last Post" will bo sounded to tho memory of the late Sergeant If. M. Colo. M'.M., New Zealand Meld Artillery, this evening in tho Artillery Drillshed, Buckle Street, whore the D Battery Eesorvo and tho Otago High School Old Boys will parade. Tho kto Sergeant Colo was awarded Hie Military Medal for a most daring and brave deed under fire last year. He was wounded, but made light of it, and returned to assist ngain at the guns. Friends and the general public are invited to honour a bravo soldier by attending to-night.
