POULTRY NOTES
—- (By Chanticleer.)
Incrcasad Productloh. Ono of the most pleasing -features of the J-88-laying test is tU« increased valno of hens as layers. Twelve years ago vrivn egg-laying; tests iverc started in New Zealand, the average value of a hen's laying was 7s. to Bs. Now it has risen to 22k. 6d., as,, shown ny tlio figures in tho last Papan'ui test. It is this increase in value that makes poultry-toping a better proposition than it was years ago. It is true foods have inorease<l in value, but the -productivity of the nen lias incroaßed considerably more. With tlio same amount of labour, plant, and feed a poultryman obtains much more profit. There are many things that mal;o to tho better result. Wo must, not attribute it all to tho increased laying ability. Better bousing bettor feeding, seleotion, higher prices for eggs, better chlekoit conditions, all contribute, to the uuccoss of tho layer of today. Poultrymen should take heart. Tlio dear feeds certainly threaten the Industry, but those, who remain in it aro sure to do ■ hotter ■ and make moro profit from less birds. "
Tha Supply of Egss. It'is generally conceded that New Zealand does .not Bupply sufficient eggs for her needs. ' The oonviction arises from those who buy Imported pulp, and others who figure that each family should have so many eggs a week, irrespective of cost. Prom appearances it looks as if we have ample supply. Tho Wellington market is said to be over-supplied, and prices aro back worse than at Chrißtclnirch. Dunedin has no shortage, and eggs have not risen abovo Us. 6d. Bakers are getting through well. Preserved eggs and pulp seem sufficient to meet their needs until the spring supply comes again. Of course, wo must not forget that many thousands of our young men are out of tho oountry, and tho shipping passenger trado is down to ft very small volume. There appears to bo little need ■ for importation, and there is certainly no need tfhy New Zealand cannot alwaya Jiroduco sufficient eggs for her needs. A Faithful Olhcor. There is no doubt tho retiring secretary of the N.Z.L'.P. Club, Mr. J. H. Shaw, has done splendid ser, vico to the poultry industry in New. Zealand.. His enthusiastic spirit'and untiring onergy to make the 001111)01111011 a suocess are deserving of the - highest pTaisc. Ou May 30 tho poultrymen will show appreciative recognition of his work by tendering him a complimentary social and presentation, with a testimonial. .From all parts of tho Dominion have como expressions 'of appreciation of his good-work. '. For twelve years ho has carried oil the arduous work 'of seoretary with scanty remuneration. Much of tho •work has been voluntary, but hap borne •abundant fruit. Mr. Shaw's place will be hard to fill-, and .it is hoped the welloarned .rest will improve his- health and afford him a pleasant holiday.
