A seaman named Honry iM'Cormicli was charged with deserting from his ship The defendant explained that ha was unable lo return to his ship because ho had been locked up for another offence The Magistrate remarked that (ho man could not he charged with desertion, and it was questionable whether a charge ot "being absent without leave" was sound. M'Cormick's vessol had since sailed, and as the Magistrate had no power to order the man to bo placed on another ship the information was dismissed. BY-LAW CASES. I'or allowing fltock to wander, William Colo and William J. Compton were each ; fined 10s., with rosts 17s. 6d.; Joe Greco was fined 20s„ with 17s. 6d. costs; anil Waller Bosovear was fined 40s. and costs. Ernest Jiadley was convicted and discharged. I'or having no lights on a vehicle Leslie Baldwin and Edward Wells were each lined 205., with costs 7s. 'For failing to attend drill Leonard Hagan was lined GOs., with costs 75., in default 21 days' military detention; and (J. H. Green was fined Ms., with costs 75., with tho option of seven days' military detention. A second-hand dealer named Symon Nausbauni was fined 10s., and costs and expenses 545., for purchasing an overcoat from a boy apparently under the ago of 10. The; lad was rather big for his age, and was taken by the dealer to bo about 17 years.
