A MILK WATERER'S DEFENCE. In the Broken Hill Police Court recently a milk vendor pleaded guilty to a charge of hnving offered adulterated milk for sale, the official analysis disclosing the presence of 10 per cent, added water. The defendant, through his solicitor, denied . having added water, and accounted for the deficiency in the milk bv the cows eating paddymelons. The defendant was .fined .£3O, and costs, it it being .his fifth conviction in three years. A few days prior to the case being heard the milk vendor in question advertised that if it was proved that ho watered his milk ho would go to gaol. The defendant evidently did not accept the finding of the Court as proof, as ho applied for, and was allowed time in wnich to pay. About a week before the ense came on, and after he had inserted his advertisement, the milk vendor called at a local business establishment, ordered some bundles of lucerne, and asked the driver to givo it to his best cow. Tho driver, being of a humorous disposition, put the lucern© on top of a water-tank, and the milk vendor is the only person who fails to appreciate tho joke. On the same day two other milk vendors were fined .E5 each, for carrying an article, to wit, water, capable of being used'.-for diluting milk. The vendors claimed they carried the water for the punioso of washing their cans.
