NUMEROUS APPEALS
CASES HEARD IN THE CITY
The First Wellington Military Service Board continued its AVellington session yesterday. Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., is proaidont of the board, and the other members are Messrs. D. M'Larai and AY. l'orry. Captain Baldwin is the military lepresentafive.
, It. was announced that the appear of George Cathie had been adjourned sine die, and that that of Francis G. B. Bayliss had been adjourned for further information, Both cases wero heard at a previous sitting. ■ An employer's appeal was made for George Sandwith, commercial traveller, and decision was reserved till noxt session of the board. r

• Town Clerk of Petone. : |, The Petone Borough Council appealed •in respect of the Town Clerk of Petone, .Walter John Gardner. 1 i « w l as , state d that one member of the stall had gone into, camp, one was to ! ? ?« n n< *t' month, and that then tho staft would consist of four girls, Gardner, and ono other man. Gardner was responsible, of .course, for tho transaction « much of the council's business, and last year ,8111,000 cash passed through W4 hands. '

John William M'Ewan, Mayor of Petone said that it would be a hardship to the Potone Borough if Gardner-was sent ",7 °l to some little time. The council asked for leave for not less than , three months. ; loave till July 16 was granted. 'Willing to Fight Again. . Percy William Barnes, market gardener, appealed on the ground that ho was a returned soldior and not a reservist . Appellant said that ho had been classed . m fit. and felt that he would like to go '.again. b : The chairman: You can volunteer -. again. ■';■•. i Captain Baldwin: Or you can withdraw your appeal. \ The appeal was withdrawn. Another Refreshing Case. Taj Mahommed Ehan, bottle yardman, s discharged soldier, who has lost an eye said that he wished to go to the war in the A.S.C. or the Ambulance, but had been classed as C 2. He had been told that the board could do something for him. , The appollant was referred to another Department, and it wis remarked ■ that this case, like the preceding one, was very refreshing. ' A Farmer's Dilemma. Alfred Harold York, a Groytown farmer, who appealed, said that he was classed as unfit in 1916, and then undertook to look after Bis brother's child to release the brother for the front. That ■brother had been killed at the- war, and appellant was now ol&ssed cs fit. The enso was adjourned to next sitting of the board in Wellington. i Thcoloflical Students. ' ■' Appeals were made for tlio following:John James- Sullivan, Patrick Scanlon, •"'Francis Rasiuusaen, James Nicholas Joyce, John Joseph Seymour, and Thomas. M. Hcffornan, theological studRespecting the 'appeal for Sullivan, de-' fcision was reserved sine die. The other appeals woro dismissed", and tho board will recommend that the reservists should be given non-combatant Bervico.
Relatives Want Soldiers Returned, A sister asked for the return from the front (Palestine) of Trooper John Flynn, who she said was ill. The request was not granted. ... Mrs. Charles Hart asked that her husband, Corporal Hart, should be sent back from tho front because she had to undergo a dangerous operation. A nurse corroborated the statements of the applicant, and the case was adjourned for the production of a doctor's certificate. • Tears and Contradictions. Decision was reserved in the case of Reginald James Downing, who described himself as a farm worker of Wallace.ville. ,
Downing said that he j had a wife and Ithreo children, from whom ho was living apart. He claimed that he was entitled to be classed as a man with a family of three, and said that it was his wife or •her father who had endeavoured to have him classed as a man without children,
on tho ground that he was not supporting tho childron. It was pointed out that tho case turncd upon whether Downing had supported his dependants for three months prior to the issuo of a certain Gazette notico toward'the end of 1917, and tho board will obtain the necessary information from the Magistrate's Court. Whilo giving ;.is evidenco Downing broke into tears. After tho conclusion of Downing's ovidence his wife came forward and llatly contradicted soma of his statements.

The. wife: No. But I went to Mr. Fraser (Government Statistician) myself, and put him in Clasa A. A Family's Good Record. Bernard George-'Girling-Biitchor, a voluntary recruit, "was appealed for by his father. The son was in cne of tho training camps. The eldest son of the family was at the front, and the only two other sons had been killed at the war. Tho father and the mother were both in very bad health, and a daughter was an invalid. Indefinite leavo is to be recommonded. ' Other Cases. Leavo till July 3.was granted Hugh M'Gregor, woodworking machinist, who sought temporary exemption. George Hart Lusk, Civil Servant, appealed for family reasons. Decision was resorved sine die. Leave till next month was granted Coleman Hyman, 6ot't goods manufacturer. Mark Bryne, labourer, Kilbirnio, was transferred to Class C. Leavo till June 5 was. the decision in the case of Cecil Chas. M'Culiough, farm hand. Leavo till July. 3 was granted Thos. Opie Tremayno, oommorcial traveller. Leave till June IS was allowed Kenneth P. Hitch, tinsmith. An appeal by Mark Isaac Tonks, baker, was dismissed, and leave till July 16 was granted. Appellant said that ho had been unable to get a man to take his place in business.; Leave till June 15 s was given A. C. Shaw, clerk, whoso case had been heard previously. , Decisions were reserved in the cases of Staff-Sorgeaut John E, Pillow, N.Z.A., a Main Body man; and It. F. M'Kay, telegraphist A month's leaTe is to be recommended for Pte. G. E. Nicholl, Thirty-eighth Specialist Co. : Albert Simes, a GJ.O. messenger, was given leave till July 3. The board will sit again at 10 a.m. to-day.
