FEILDING ASSAULT CASE

ONE MAN CONVICTED.

Palmerston North, May IG. Before Mr. Justice Hosking, Michael Roughan, Simmon. M'Greal, and Jamea Egan were charged with assaulting the Rev. Frederick Stockwell at Feildi_ng on February 13, and doing Mm grievous bodily harm. Evidence tras fciven that at the conclusion of a Protestant Political Association meeting a crowd followed Mr. Stockwell'and other clergymen alone the street, and eventually Mr. Stockwell was violently assaulted and received injuries from which he is still suffering. Alter hearing the evidence for the prosecution, tho Judge ordered M'Greal and Egan to be discharged, there being no evidence to connect them with, the actual assault. Tho Judge summed up against Roughen, and the jury brought in a. verdict of guilty. The passing of eentenca was deferred.
