Colonel Collins, N.Z.M.C., is to go on soi'vico again in command of a hosnital ship.
Mr. G. Allport, Secretary for Marino, has left Wellington for Auckland on Departmental business. No further news of Major BalcombeDrown, M.C., R.F.O. (reported missing on the Western front) is at present obtainable. In the absence of definite news hopes are encertained of his survival, possibly ns a prisoner of war. Mr. C. IT. Poolo, M.P., is shortly going abroad as an envoy for t!ho New Zealand Y.M.C.A.' For some time now thi3 organisation has bec-n asking Mr. Foole to make a visit to England on Y.M.C.A. business, but up till tiio prwent ho has not been able to arrange to go. It had been his intention to go right on to England, but this seems to be impossible on this occasion, as he is unwilling to bo absent from the next session of Parliament. He will, however, visit America, see the American camps and the methods of work adopted bT the Y.M.C.A. there. Mr. Poole is just within military age, but ihe has been classed C 2 (fit'for home service only) by the medical authorities.
It is announced in the Gazette that the Colonial Auxiliary Forces' Officers Decoration has been awarded to Honorary Colonel J. 6. Hushes, C.M.G., D.5.0., retired list.
A Press Association telegram from Grevmouth announces tho death of Mr. Jacob Theodore Skoghmd. The late Mr. Skoglund was an old identity on tho Coast, where he arrived from Victoria in 1859. He was Mayor of Greymouth from 1596 to 189 S. Ho was a hativo of Sweden. Mr. Leonard Blundell, younger eon of Mr. Louis Blundell, has been presented bv tho combined staffs of tho "Evening Post" with a handsomo gift aB a mark of esteem on tho occasion of his approaching marriage. Mr. Charles. Stubbs secretary and accountant) mado the presentation, and Mr. F. J. Earle (chief subeditor) and Mr. T. Jones (factory manager) also congratulated' Mr. Blundell, and wished him every happiness. Guunor William Neylon, son of Mrs. Ncylon-Butlor, of ICelburn Parade, w duo back in Wellington in a few days. He left with the Tenth Reinforcements, and has been through all the important engagements since lie arrived at tlio Western front, whero ho was wounded shortly after the Messines battle.
Mr. James Anderson Brass, n Southland cottier sinco ISM, is dead, aged 92. He was married threo times, and hart a family of sixteen. Of thirty-five graiidchildrcn thirty-two survive; of sixty-two grcat-grojidcliildron nftymno survive I and ho also leaves ono grout-great-grand-child. This makes in all 114 descendants, of whom 101 nro living. Owing to indisposition, which lias necessitated a trip abroad, Mr. Paul Latham will not bo üblo to perform »t tlio concert to bo given in tho Grand Opera Houso this evening. Ills many friends will wish Mr. Lntham n speedy recovery. Lieutenant 'A. Flux (Otago Regiment), son of Mr. Gcorgo Flux, of AVollingtoii, was among tho omcors to return wounded from tho front yesterday.
Lieutonnnt Ceoil R, Howdon, Ron of Mr. P. Howdon, of Wellington, returned to Wellington from tho front among tho 6ick and wounded draft which arrived yesterday.
Mr. W. E. Caldow was a passenger for the south Inst ovening.
Among thoso who relumed from tho front yesterday was Lieutenant Itoilwrt IT. Danioll, eon of Mr. 0. E. Danioll, chairman of Mio Wcillinptoi). Harbour Board. Lieutenant Danioll, who wont lo Franco with New Zealand Rill© Brigade, was badly shot in tho loTk leg, but is innking a good recovery.
