ACCIDENTS TO WATERSIDE WORKERS
COMMISSION OP INQUIRY OPENED. By Telecranu—Preaa Aaeoclalion. Auckland, May 15. The Commission of Inquiry into the causes and prevention, of accidents to waterside workers opened its sittings today. Evidence was given on bohajf of the Waterside Workers' Federation, witnesses relating their experiences of cases of unclutching of winches, insufficient lighting of holds and hatchways, and defective ladders in holds, and their ideas as to the need for closer inspection of cargo-handling work and a better system of hatchway nets. Some witnesses said they thought the workers should appoint their own inspectors of gear. Another alleged that the more a man reported defects in gear the less work he obtained. Others made similar allegations. A complaint was also made of insufficiency of lighting on the Onehunga Wharf. Mention was made of cases where general merchandise and foodstuffs had been loaded into holds, which previously held manures and cattle, before they had been thoroughly cleaned out.
