1 The fortnightly meeting of the Society 1 for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took place at the secretary's oflice, Cus--1 tumhouse Quay, last evening, Mr. Kil- , gour, in the absence of Mr. Meadowcroft, in the chair. There was c. fair a'londance of members. The inspector's report dealt with 11 cases—3 horses 'and 1 calf were destroyed; 6 horses were put off work for various periods, and a caution was given for ill-treating by unnecessary beating. One man was before the Court < and fined ~£G 125., including costs, for cruelly ill-using his horse, nnd a case is pending against n person on a chaigo of neglecting and starving a hor.sa in his charge. The notice boards to be t(fixed over certain water troughs were reported as ready to be placed in position. Subscriptions to the amount of M 10s. were received, including i.'l Is. fiom Dalgety and Co. A complaint was received from drivers of the slippery state cf Ihe rwil way in Upper Cuba Street, i; 1 tiie vicinity of the People's Palace, aud the complaint was ordered to be forwarded to the City Engineer,for necessary action.
