Second, Lieutenant R. H. Norton, who died of wounds on May ; 9. was tho youngest 6on of the lato Mr. H. H. Norton and Mrs. Norton, of Auckland, well known in this city. The lato officer enlisted with tho Fifth Reinforcements as a private, and won his commission in tho field. Prior to his enlistment lie was on the staff of tho Public Trust Offico both at Wellington and Auckland, Both of his brothers are on active service.

Mr. Hydo Thorn-George, Gisborne manager of tho Now Zealand Insurance Company, says an exchange, has beon appointed to tho position of Napier manager, vico Mr. H. M. Didsbury, promoted to take charge of tho Dunedin branch. Mr. H. A. Fox, of 'he Office Appliance Co., Ltd., has just been advised that his eon, Sergeant H. L. Fox, who left with the Thirty-first Reinforcements, is in hospital in England, suffering from a severe attack of trench fever.

Mrs. Martin, widow of tho late Dr. A. A. Martin, of Palmerston North, has returned to tho Dominion.

The late Trooper Eric T. Harper's fino qualities as a sportsman were recognised by players of many kinds pf games in Canterbury. So it was that very sincere regret at tho death of Trooper Harper was expressed at tho Canterbury Rugby League's meeting on Saturday evening, by the chairman, Mr. A. E. Hooper. Mr. Hooper pointed out that Trooper Harper was an example for any player to' follow, being noted for his olean sport, arid being at all times n gentleman on the playing fields.- He had the respect and homage of opponents, confreres, and officials. The sympathy of all footballers in the Dominion would be extended to the relatives of one of the best players who had ever taken part in tho game. Tho meeting passed a resolution of sympathy with Trooper Harper's relatives, and also adjourned for a time as a mark of respect.

The death occurred at his residence, Crieff Kond, Northland, on Monday, of Mr. Anthony ijtubbs, formerly of the Railway Department, aged 75 years. The late Mr. Stubbs was born and educated in Staffordshire, and was brought up to tho buiding trado. In 1875 he arrived at Port Chalmers in the ship Christian jrAusland, and in the same year he joined tho staff of tho Canterbury Provincial Government railway workshops. While holding tho position of inspector of works in connection with tne new passenger station at Christchurch, he was transferred to tho General Government. For five years after that work had been completed he was in tho employ of Mr. P. Strouts, a Christohurch architect, as a draughtsman and an works. He then joined the Publio Works Department, but left when the office wa3 abolished. Ho re-entered the Public Service, joining Die Railway Department in Napier <is a works inspector, and' continued his conncction with the railwaysserving in Wellington and Wanganuiuntil he retired on superannuation about ten years rgo. Mr. Stubbs, who was a man held in the greatest respect, by all who knew him, lias loft a widow, tlireo s'jns and (hrco (laughters.
