MEETING OF- THE COUNCIL. " The Petone Borough Council raet List evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. W. M'Bwiin, presiding. Other members present were Councillors C. P. Brocklebank, W. Cox, J. Foster, J. Churchonee, S. Nowland, D. M'Kenzie, E. Jones, and E. • Tovey. The' Oiislov; Borough Council wrote suggesting a conference- of jocal bodies to consider the whole question of hospital levies. The proposal was endorsed, by the council, and the Mayor and Counwere appointed delegates. . The action of n sub-committco was ratified in coming to tho following arrangement with the Wellington Eugby Union for thp latter Twdy's nso of tho Eeei'eation Ground (threo playing fields) during the 'prasont season: All gate-tak-ings to go to tho union; and council to receive ,£ls rental for the season. Intimation was received from the . District' Health Officer stating that if tho drainage'work atLever Bros/ soap works was carried out in accordance with tho council's by-laws, ho was prepared to grant his approval to the establishment of. an offensive trade at tho company's works. It was decided to direct the foreman to put tho three municipal 'buses into working order as soon as possible, and arrange for a two-bus service on the basis of a ro'a.tiqn of 'buses, It was practically impossible, it was stated, to maintain a three-bus service. One 'bus had to be kept in the repair shop for a relief service in ease of a breakdown. The Mayor and Councillors Newmnn and Cox were appointed a permanent 'bus coirmittee. In the course of his monthly report the borough engineer- (Mr. ■ A. Cowie) .mentioned that the oathing season boing .over, the caretaker's .services had. been ;djspei!s,cd-with. -He.had done his duty ;well, and he took a great interest in his ;work. .'Although the summer was not so good to. the council as the two preceding seasons, the number- of persons nsing the beaoii pointed to its growing popularity. had been taken of tlio conVoniences for-bathers not only by local residents, but by people from : oufsi(b the district. Top-dressing had been prepared for tho municipal. bowl••ing preen, and the work of pnttinsr it on wiuld- be proceeded with as soon as possible. He hoped the green would bo im.proved for next season.
