FRENCH CLUB
The weekly meeting of the French Clnb was held on Thursday evening. Captain Barclay presided. Deference was made to tlic death of Mrs. MacPhail, lecturer in French nt Victoria College, who was an old member.of tlio club, and a motion to. express condolence with her relatives was passed. Miss Mend recited a poem by Victor Hugo, "Le Print'emps," and 11 r. Balham gave several interesting readings. The first was from "Napoleon an Theatre," by Saimloux, the piece chosen being entitled ".Madame Sans Gene."- He then gave two shorter, but very amusing, pieces, "Les Vneances" and "1.0 Potache." Mr. Bnlhnm also made some suggestions for the better working of the club, and spoke of what used to be done at the' Auckland French Club some years ago. Mr. Ballv.im was cordially thanked for his readings, and also for his suggestions. Tt was announced that at the next meeting Mrs. Johnson would read a paper on "Bordeaux," a town where she lived for several years. "Tho Marseillaise" was sung at the close. Six new members were elected.
