HONOURING THE BRAVE

GATHERING AT CLABEVILLE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Masterton, May 7. At the Clarevillo Hall this evening a gathering took place to do honour to 1? young men from the Claxeville district who have laid down their lives for their country. The hall was well filled for tho occasion, amongst those present being the Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald, Minister of Agriculture, Sir Walter Buchanan, M.L.C., Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby, member for the district, and Mr. Sykos, M.P. for Masterton. Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Allen, who have been very active in connection with tho erection of tho hall, and who havo been unwearied in their efforts for the promotion of tho social well-being of the district, had presented portraits of tho 17 soldiers to bo hung in the hall. The Hon. Mr. Mac Donald performed the unveiling ceremony, and in the course of a stirring speech paid tribute to the gallant men who had fought and died for their country. Sir Walter Buchanan and Jlr. Hornsby also spoke in a similar strain. During the evening a number of musical items were excellently given, aud a voto of thanks was passed to Mr. and Mrs. Allen for their fife-long services on behalf of tho community in which they bad spent so many years.
