o DEATH OF A SOLDIER. An incmest was held yesterday aftornoon by Mr. W. G. Kiddol), S.M., into the cause of death of n returned soldier named Louis Lucas, who died iu the Wellington Hospital nt C.lO p.m. on Thursday last. On April G, Lucas tried to Ixiard a tramenr at a J.on-stop point in Lambton Quay, whilo the oar was in motion. He was knocked down and received injuries necessitating the nmputation of his right leg, from the shock of which ho never recovered. Joseph Carruthers, motornun, said that just before i p.m. he left Lambton Station for Newlown. Ho stopped as usual at the Midland Hotel, and, just before ho started, ho saw a eoldier about 30 yards uivay pickiiij? his hat up out of the "utter. 'I'll" car vns again starltd, and' witness lost sight of tho soldier. Then ho heard a suream und stopped tho car. On looking round ho saw the man under the back v.heels of tho car. 'Tho man was conscious, and told tho constablo that he tried to catch the car, but the car caught him. Hu was very much under the influence of liquor. The wheels of tho ear had to bo jacked to release tho injured man, who was removed to tho Hospital. After other evidence of a. corroborative nature, tho inquest was adjourned till this morning at 9.30 o'clock.
