THE AGE OF SERVICE
HEN AGED -1-1 CLASSED C 2. Sir,—l would esteem it a very great; fnvour if you could inform me from a. relia.blo source, through llio columns of your paper, in reference to the following: A man who has turned U years jl nge drawn in the ballot—is lie classed Cii by the Medical Hoard? But if passed medically fit, would that mean for servicu abroad ? Opinions differ greatly. .For example a friend of mine, 13 years and 0 months, came before (ho Medic.il Board, and wad classed C 2; also another man, it years 2 months, also classed C 2. In your issue of May 2 two cases seem totally different. G. Shand, Loan iimt Mercantile Co., aged 41, appealed on tlni ground as an essential. The appeal dismissed—ordered into camp. The other —a bookseller—William ikwvih, Wellington, adjourned sino die; aged 11—I am, etc., 13.U [A man who has turned 44 years of ago when ho is called for servicu is classed C 2by the Medical Hoard, _ and. given leave sino die. A man who has not reached bis forty-fourth birthday when the Gazette containing his name is published, is liable for active service, even if he becomes 41 years of age beforo reaching camp. The employee of tho> Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. mentionEd by you was only 43 years of age wlwa summoned for service.»
Sir— statements have from time to time appeared in the newspapers that resurvists of 43 yens and upwards will not bo called upoc for active service, uatiia military authorities in England consider them to lie too old. As there are n. hirge numlwr of men in the Second Division between the agw of 43 and 15 y°ar» who will be called in the ballots, artel :v great-deal of uncertainty sMll exist* amorif those men as to whether or nob they will be required to go into camp* or be placed in 01a«a C 2; if you can,, through vour »olumns sripply definite information on iliis toint, it will be greatly appreciated.-I am, etc.. [If von are 44 years of ago on the dal.9 of the Gazette summoning you for seryico you will be class«l C 2 by the Medical. Board on production of evidence ot ageThis means that for the present at least men of the ago stated will not be sen'on active service. The boards have been given definite instructions on this point.]
