ALLOWANCES FOR SOLDIERS' DEPENDANTS

Sullivan moved: "That this council condemns the mean spirit displayed by the Government towards members of the Second Division and their wives and children iu tho matter of allowances, and calls upon it 'o immediately grant Hie full demand of tho Second Division League, <ti:d council declares emphatically that the'increase of Cd. ner day in the children's nllowanco decided on by tho Government i* absurdly inadt£ (juate as a solution of the problem," Councillor Climio movud as an amendment: "That this council, while condemning the resolutions passed at a recent meeting with reference to the Second Division, held at the Opera House, and while repudiating the name as being disloyal and in no way representing the true feeling of th« citisens of Christchurch, is of opinion that tho present allowann.es to soldiers' dependents are in many cases quite 'inadequate, and urges the Government to deal with the matter promptly, in order to allay the present widespread dissatisfaction" It was decided that further discussion on the matter be postponed till next, meeting of the council in order not to prejudice any uf tho cases coming beforo the Court this wept.
