IRISH POLICY
GOVERNMENT'S SERIOUS DIFFICULTIES London, May 2. The political . correspondent of the "Daily News" states that tho Government is involved in serious difficulties over the Irish policy. In the first place, it lias not yet been able to find a Viceroy. Several peers have refused the appointment, and it is now suggested that there should bo a commission of three, including General Kir Bryan Mahou. There is ' a' pifcsibility that T #scount Midlcton will act temporarily, but it is feared that tho Nationalists will regard tiiis as a threat of military operations. In the secohd place, the Government committee which is drafting the Home Rule Bill is faced with grave 'difficulties. Up to tht- present it Ims only settled tho preamble, which foretells' the appointment of the federal principle. In the third placc the Tories are stiffening against any kind of Irish Home "Rule. Responsible Labour members who oppose conscription unless Home Rulo is granted consider that (he abandonment of both projects is Hie Government's only wny oat.—Aus.-N.H. C'ablo Assn. SHARP CRITICISM BY SIR EDWARD CARSON. (Rec. May 3, 9.43 p.m.) London, May 3. The Dublin correspondent of tho "Times" states that Sir Edward Carson has written to tho Southern Unionist Committee: "in the present condition of Ireland it is littlo short of insanity tho Government reopening the Home Rule question, preparing a hurried new solution, and placing Ireland undw the joint rulo ol tho Sinn Fein, the Nationalists, and (he Roman Catholic hierarchy, and reveals statesmanship manufactured from panic, and founded on broken pledges and breach of trust." Sir f divuni Carson refuses to consider any alliance.—'"Tho Times."
