A DRASTIC MEASURE
FOOD PROFITS BILL PASSED BY THE COMMONS. London, May 1. Tho House of Commons has passed the Food Profits Bill, imposing as a penalty the forfeiture of double the amount of any illegal profit. Mr. Hewitt explained that this would bo in addition to existing penalties. Whatever other penalty might bo inflicted at tho Magistrate's discretion, the defendant must forfeit twice the illegal profit. Ministers refused the leqncst of several members that forfeiture should also bo at tho Magistrate's discretion, and asserted that the clauso was the very essoneo of tho Bill.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
