THE RED JERSEY
COMI'UfITS CAMPAIGN BEGINNING Extensive arrangements have been made by tho • Citizens' Committee of the Eet Jersey Appeal, for the inauguration oi the Red and Blue Artillery campaign, which will continue for several weeks, To-morrow will be the great recruitiup day, when recruits for both armies wil. bo enlisted, though the process, in the financial sense, will bo exactly opposite to that followed when a man takes the King's shilling. In the present instance, the .fair helpers and sellers <>f badges will lake the man's shilling and present him with the colours of the army ho has joined. Otherwise, the procedure and obligations are much the same as in ordinary enlistment. Tho recruits may be of any 6ex,.siiie, or shape—men, women, and children may fight in the Battle of Comforts. Tall men and short men, all are eligible, and there is no appeal court to obtain exemption. Tho only way in j whioii this may bo approached is to buy i both badges. Tho buyer then becomes ! a neutral, and is expected to help both I sides. Tho satno wide range of ([ualifij cations applies to women, girls, and j children. Beautiful women, pretty girls, charming children—charming women, beautiful girls, ami pretty children -they are all liable to be regarded as shirkers if they do not wear one or tfthor of the colours. . The gun from which the first moneyshell is fired will be well and truly laid at noon by the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke, C.M.G.). After that the battle will become general. On each side of the battle will be twelve fiUDurbs, and these have been arranged in opposing pairs, For instance, Newtown will be tho opponent of Petone, and Berhamporo of Thorndon. Tho points scored by each gun will bo fully recorded, while the aggregate of each side will make what is called a I "running total"—it will be running-up, not running away, and at every bang of the guns, the totals will run and jump higher. The possibility of their going so high as to become invisible has been provided for- by giving the men who will look after the totals some binoculars. | An aeroplane will also be ready to pur16uo these running totals, and exhibit them to the public.
