MAGISTRATE'S COURT
I'OLICE AND CIVIL CASES. Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided over a sitting, of tho Magistrate's Court yesterdny and dealt with the ■ polico cases. A man named William Arthur M'Millan pleaded guilty to a charge of indecency' in Motoroii Street on Monday, and was sentenced to a year's imprisonment. A youth named William Bannerman Rogers pleaded guilty to stealing a bicycle valued at i 3, the property of Oscar Cornelius Smith. "The bicycle was taken from the Kelburn tramway stand and sold to a second-hand dealer, who in turn-had sold it to a customer, and the machine had not been recovered. The lad was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the Magistrate intimating that ho would recommend him to Uβ placed in an industrial 6chool. Marjory Kathleen Trott was charged that on December 54, 1917, at Wangauut she did receive £6 18s. 2d/on terms rcnuirin" her to account for tho name to her employer, and failed to do,so. Thero was a eecond charge of receiving- .£lO 3s. on January 30, 1918. On the application of Chief Detectivo Boddam, sho was remanded to appear atAVanganui onThursday, May 2. ' , For insobriety, one first offender was fined 205., in default 48 hours'-imprison-ment, and two others 10s. each, with the alternative of 2-i hours' imprisonment. CIVIL CASES. Mr. W. Ci. Young 'appeared, proceeded against James Leivin to reeovei £U ?«. 6t). for an alleged breach in respect to the performance of a painting covenant embodied in tho lease of the Railway Hotel, Marton, of which the defendant was the lessee. The defendant counter-dnimeri for £W &'• for alleged Rtnictural alterations to tlie hotel made by him at the request of the Licensing Committee for the district. After hearing the evidence of the parties Ihn Magistrate reserved his decision. Mr. A. Dunn appeared for the defendant. JUVENILE COURT. Mr. S. K jrOirlliy, S.M.. I'roMdod over a short sitting of H'e Juvenile Court hold yesterdny morning, when three truancy cases worn dealt with. I'-fl failing to send their children to sehoo? regularly, Alfred Uriidlcy was finwl 10s., with 7fi. eosta, in default seven days' imprisonment, and Mrs. Maud Whitburn iias convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. , In the latter case thtv boy had boon kept from school during the hop-pickiiiK senson, but the lad's n"«t goo<l record wns taken into consideration. The trato warned the mother tliat such lenient treatment would not again be shown if the boy's attendant at school in tho future was irregular. Mrs. King, M_ahina Bay, was fined .£2 and costs 75., in default 11 days' imprisonment, for failing to enrol on the school regieter a thirteen-yonr-old child.
