- THE MAYO CASE PRIME MINISTER ASKS FOR INFORMATION ' By Telegrapli-PreßS Association. Auckland, April 27. Mr. Massey wired to the chairman of the Auckland ?doard of Education (Mr. Garland): "Have just seen the report of the nicutiiig regarding Mayo. Pleaso wiro me whether you voted in favour or tho motion to retain his services." Mr. Garland replied: "Wag absent from meeting addressing primary school ro Anzac Day. Much distressed at what happened. Am giving notice of motion to rescind.tho minute, for the purpose of moving ,a resolution to. dismiss Mayo." Tho Auckland Education Board last week considered the resignation from tho teaching staff of tho Technical College o! Mr. Heury W. Mayo, who was recently fined .£25 for publishing a statement indicating disloyalty. The resignation wu» tendered in consequence of the conviction. Mr. G. W. Murray said tho committee of the Technical College, of which ho was a member, had decided to refer the matter to tho board, as only hall) the committee members were present when the resignation came before them. The question was whether the board should accept the resignation or not. At nret ho had thought that to, accept it was tho only course, but he had been informed that Mr. Mayo had previously acted in a patriotic way, having assisted in tho patriotic work of tho coliego. H* had also beon instrumental in getting the Boy Scouts to- salute returned soldiers. Mr. George George, director of the college, said that Mayo was an excellent teacher, hie subjects .being mathematics and French. His actions in the past had not indicated that he held disloyal sentiments. He had subscribed generously according to his means to patriotic funds. Mr. F. W. H. Brinsden said tho Court had punished, the man, and moved that Jlr. Mayo bo' retained on the teaching staff. Mr. Murray seconded the motion pro \forina so that it might be discussed. None of the members, one or two of whom had left the meeting, had anything to say on the matter, and the chairman thereupon put the ifiotion. There were one or two "ayes" and no "noes," and the chairman declared the motion carried. .
