WAR INTERCESSIONS
SERVICE IN MELBOURNE TOWN HALL. Fully five thousand people—men, women, nnd children—with sorious minds, l'elleoting the seriousness of the times, mot at the Melbouruo Town Hall (says the "Age") with one aim of intercession with God for the iinuics and peoples of tho nation and her Allies, «nd for their enemies, lliat their hearts might 'bo turned. It ivas decided that the following tabic message be sent to the Prime Minister of Great Brilnin (Mr. Lloyd George), a member of the council volunteering to defray the cost:— We, a concourse of thousands of belioving people, assembling weekly in Melbourne Town Hull to plend our Empire's cause before God. and to .invoke Divine blessing and relief at this time of sore trial and much sorrow, send you loyal greetings, and earnest assurances of fervent prayers for your guidance, wisdom, courage, faith, and blessing in this your hour of weightiest triiil nnd responsibility . as Christian, statesman and leader.' Wo also respectfully urge calling the nation to publicly acknowledge and honour God in a universal day of priiyev throughout tho Empire, it being written—"the nations Shall Know that I >im (he Lord, sidth tho . Lord God, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes. Let Him be your fear, lot Him be your dread, and Ho shall bo for n sanctuary." The serious intentions of all wore evident. There was no exhibition of extravagance in the street. Everywhere quietly dressed men and women, who had stepped in for a while from the busy world, wets quietly doing their duty by their nation and their religion. From outside, as the doors opened to admit yet a few more every now and then from the constant etream, there was wafted in occasionally the strains of a military band voicing an appeal to active service; inside, a clarion call just as insistent, voiced an appeal to prayer.
