MAGISTRATE'S COURT
A. short sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held yesterday morning, Mr. S. E. McCarthy, S.M., being on the Bench. For insobriety, John Patrick Downey, ngninst whom there were two previous convictions, was fined £§. in default, M days' imprisonment; Catherine Treloar, an old offender, was iincdliOs., with the option of seven days' imprisonment. One first offender was fined 205., with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment, and another was convicted and ordered U> be handed over to tho military authorities. Ellen Grahani' proceeded against Christina Rhaw for assault and for using provoking and insnlting language, and Christina Shaw brought, a counter-clntm against Ellen Graham for assault. This was a quarrel between neighbours, and after hearing the evidence the Magistrate held that Christina Shaw was to blame, and fined her 10s., with costs' .£2 lis. Ellen Graham was held to have acted in self-defence, and Hid . information against her was dismissed. Mr. H. V. O'Learv npneared for Mrs. Shaw and. Mr. G. G. 'G. Watson, for Mrs., Graham.
