A QUESTION OF LOYALTY
RESIGNATION OF A TEACHER DISCUSSED. By Tclegranh.—Press Association. Auckland, April 24. Tho Auckland Education Board to-day I considered tho resignation from tba teaching staff of the Technical College of Mr. Henry AV. Mayo, who was recently fined ,£25 for publishing a statement indicating disloyalty. The resignation was tendered in consequenco qf tho conviction. Mr. G. AT. Murray said the committee of the Technical College, of which he •was-a member, had decided to refer the matter to the board, as only half the committee members were .present when the rcsiguation came before them. The question was whether the board should accept the resignation or not. -At- first ho had thought that to accept it'was the only course, but he 'had been informed 'that Mr. Mayo had previously acted in a patriotic way, having assisted in the patriotic work of the inlloge. He had also been instrumental in getting the Boy Scouts to salute returned soldiers. Mr. George George, director of tho col--said that Mayo was an excellent teacher, his subjects being mathematics and /French. His actions in the past had not jndicatod that-ho held disloyal sentiments. He bad subscribed generously -according lo his means to patriotic funds. Mr. P. AV. H. Brinsdcn said the' Court bad punished the man, and moved that Mr. Mayo be retained on the teaching staff." Mr. Murray seconded the motion pro forma so that it might be discussed. None of tho members, one or two of whom had left the meeting, had anything to say on the matter, and the chairman thereupon put the motion. There were one, or two "ayes" and no "noes," aud the chairman declared the motion carried.
