WHITE CROSSES —. —$ Softly the surge on Gallipoli's sands Sings to the winds of the morning, Telling of heroes from faraway lands, Who shaped, of braiic deeds, 'with hot hearts and strong hands, , Achaplet of thorns— They made it of thorns, The wounds and the suffering scorning. . Redly the dawn on Gallipoli glows, Fanned by the winds that are sweeping Up from the beach, by each gully that knows Thorn and white poppy and trailing wild rose, To a slope 'ncath the suiv— That is warmed by the sun, Where: battle-worn fighters are sleeping. Soaring serene on Gallipoli stands The ridge that was red with the fighting, When victory slipped from their hot, eager hands, Oh ! comrades and. brothers from these quiet landSj Who fought till you, fcll\ So bravely you fell, Tour eyes with such steadfastness lighting ! At sunset the surge on Gallipoli's shore Is whispering still, as it tosses, Of heroes, whose spirits the singing winds bore To the West, to the West; who unflinchingly wore Bright chaplets of thorns— .
