WKEOK IN PACIFIC. Messrs. Lane and Dawson, of Sydney, have received advico that tho Amorican schooner James 11. Bruce, bound from Eureka to Sydney with 600,000 ft. of timber, has become a total wreck In the Pacific. AH hands, however, were saved and landed In Sydney. The James H. Bruce wafl a four-masted schoonor of 476 tons, built at Fairhaven (Cal.) in 1898, and owned by Messrs. Eechcn and Minor, of San Francisco. Sho measured ]&6ft in length, had a beam cf 37ft., and dentil of 12ft. sin.-("Daily Telegraph.") MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. On a Union Company's overseas cargo ressel Mr. J. Appleman has relieved Mr. W. Whitefield, second officer, nnd Mr. T. Scott has joined as third engineer in place of Mr. W. J. Ormiston. Mr. h. Hugos has joined a Union Company's special servico steamer as extra third officer. Tho Baden Powell yesterday put into Wauganui for bunker coiil, which had run short on account of stress of weather. She is due here to-day, and will sail to-morrow night for New Plymouth only. . '
According to news received in Sydney from. Washington, positions as Federal doputy shipping commissioners have been thrown open to women. Appoiutci'B will have tho right to board ships in their capacity as Federal officers, and will be called upon to deal with questions arising between the' masters of vessels and seamen.
The Customs Department, will observe Anzao Day as a whole holiday. The Hinemoa will then return to. port to provision for the North Island lighthouses..

Tho Nikau is to undergo her annual overhaul at Nelson next week, and while she is oil tho run for about a week tho Kaitoa will carry en tho service, making a trip every second day. Tho Jlapourika sailed from Auckland at 10 p.m. on Monday, for Wellington. Blio ia to ieavo hero about Friday on tho return trip. The Waverley will bo receiving repairs on the elip until about Saturday. It has now been found necessary to strip, rofoatcn and .-ccaulk tho Annie Mill, which haa had a lengthy stay on tho liyttelton Blip. Tho original tntentioua woro to repair the top sides and fit a new keelson and falso keel, but on an inspection being mailo it was iound that tho coppering on tho bottom of the vessel needed renowing. She will probably come of! the slip neit week to have her two masts refitted, afterwards ontoriug tho New Zealand coastal trade. The port of Otago appears to be faced with a possibly serious position (nays the "Otago Daily Times"). As ft result of the boiler of the tug Dunedin being condemned as unsafe for U6O, tho veesel will haveto be laid up. A new boiler will cost, it is eald, between £4000 and £5000. but under tho existing conditions there does not seem any likelihood of being able to procure one within tho next twelve months or even longer. Whether tho board will bo able to aociiro a second-hand boiler to .fit the Dunerlin ••emnins to bo Been. In the meantime tho board scemß to liavo no alternative but to pay off tho crow of the Dunedin, and to rely solely on tho Plucky far tug work. Tho working of rlio Dunodin costs something in tho vicinity of £2000 per annum.
