HINT OF GERMAN MENACE IN THE PACIFIC Sydney, April 23. The "Dnily Telegraph" publishes the following Melbourne telegram-.-"Within the past forty-eight hours information has oomo io hand which points to the probability that tlio realities of war will soon bo brought before Australia in the most convincing fashion. Steps havo been taken by the Defence authorities to copo with a situation which may at any moment assume grave proportions. More than this cannot be said tor tho present."—Press Assn. STATEMENT BY SENATOH PEAKCE. (Hoc! April 23, 8.40 p.m.) Melbourne, April 23. Senator Pearce, referring to the rum-' ours of an alleged danger 1o Australia, said that there was nothing that need alarm tho public. The Government had thought it advisable to tako certain procautionary measures to guard against interference with shipping.—Press Assn. In reply to a question last evening, the Prime Minister (Mr. llassev), referring to tho above message, said that there w.is no need for the public to feel alarmed. When ho had definite information on tho matter he would make a statement to tho public.
