NOTES AND COMMENTS

GMWCOE.I ' Fridav next is. : nomination day for the Marlborough Bacing Club's Meeting, which takes placc 011 Tuesday and Wednesday, May 14 and 15. Up' till 9.30 p.m. on Friday. nest, Secretary W. Hall, of the Wauganui Jockey Club, will receive nominations for the winter meeting, to be held on -May J and 25. . . Entries for the principal handicaps at the Great. Northern Steeplechase Meeting are due on Friday. The fixture is a twodays' one .this year, and will be held on June 1 and 3. Tho Auckland-owned colt, The Hpanuer, was left in the Hawke's Bay Stakes in error, and will not take his placc 111 t*hc field. M. D. O'Shca, the Auckland light-weight apprentice, who broke his leg before tho Mauawatu Meeting, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery in tho Palmerston North Hospital. The imported horse Cynic is evidently to be given a chance to earn distinction as a. jumper. According to a Gisboruc writer, he was tried over a. couple of obstacles recently with Fagot, as a schoolmaster when he' jumped like a veteran at the game. The yearling full-sister to-Hymestra. and Torfreda, purchased by' Mr. A. M'Donald, of Masterton, at tho Kararnu dispersal sale, is being handled by J. -Tamicson at 'UpaKi, .audi will commence training rork shortly.

The Masterton sportsman, Mr. AV. Keinball, gave' 2050 guineas for Hjuiwtra in November, and already the colt has won £2500 in stakes, to that he is e chea'j three-year-old. Hymestra. is engaged in the Hawke's Bay Stakes 011 Saturday, in which he has incurred full penalties.

j The well-known Wanganui horseman, W. il'rice, is seriously ill at present,,- and was unable t.o fulfil his riding engagements at the Manawatu Meeting last wee);.

Despite his age Croesus is still the best hand-cap sprinter in tho Dominion at tho present time. He has scored in threw handicaps and one weight-for-age race this season, and in two of the handicaps he haß carried 9st. 131b. A curious fact about, the victories of Croesus is that, though he has been most consistent, (his season, he regularly pays good dividends.

The Chokebore candidates, Heathercote and Gamecock, were expected to race well at the Manawatu Meeting, but neither of them showed any form at all. In the case of Heathercote it was reckoned that after his two defeats of Almoner at Riccarton he would keep Fininark busy in-the Sires' Produce Stakes,, but though he began well ho never once threatened danger, and Torfreda, who finished behind him at Riccarton,■ reversed tho Champagne Stakes form. .Most likely tho Chokebore colt was more at home over the long straight at Ricliarton than was Torfreda; Gamecock has been a most disappointing three-year-old. . Twelve months .ago he defeated Estland in the C.J.O. Champagne Stakes and when the latfer.came out. the next day and von with 9st, 81b. it made Gamecock look liko a good colt, but Einee then he lias gone' backwards and has failed to win a l-acc. Popular opinion is that F. Davis will have, his work cut out to get Estland ready for the Hawke's Bay Cup, to be run on Friday nest. The Derby winner was a bit above hinwelf at Awanuni, and he will require stretching out over a bit of ground.if he is to : sec out twelve furlongs. The last tlirie-'year-old to win the Hawke's Bay Cup vas Mr. W. G. Stead's Eligible,' who carried Bst. 111b. Eligible was successful in roTeral good handicaps, and he did not start in many weight-for-age races Finmark. who wijij tho Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes lass, week, has won 31*60 sov.s. in stake mciney, this season. While on the way to a Christchnrch blacksmith's in He early part of last week, the well-kn«wn pacing mare Soda shied and came dovn on the road. When the diminutive dityighter of Harold Dillon found her feet it was discovered that one of her hocks bid the flesh torn away. The injury, according to an exchange, is so serious that, there is little prospect of her racing agaSn this season. The Malster mare Swert. Corn has been leased by Mr. W. G. Stead to Mr. L. M'Kenzie, of Hastings. Heurlra, who scored in a hurdle rate at his first start'over the battens, has been turned out for a lengthy spell. Wallace Isinglass was reported by cablegram recently: to have ended his turf career.. The Chestnut horse was one of the best Australian w.f.a. horses, having won over 6000 sovf. in stake money this season. Mr. "J. Bamn's"-horse finished third in the last Melbourne Cup behind Wcstcourt and Linglc.; Wallace Isinglass is by Wallace (Carbine—Melodious), from Glass Queen (Isinglass-Queengoid). The lastmentioned we, Isinglass, holds the record as a stake earner, having won no less an amount than 57,455 sovs.

It is reported from Auckland that the English hojuo Polydamon has seen the last of tlio,. rane tracks. Folydamon arrived in the Dtfininion in July last year, and won the Christmas ITandlcan at the A.R.O. Summer Meeting. It ia said that the son of Polyiwrtus will do stud duty in tlio Gisborne, district next season.

Early /)ftwn, a two-year-old filly by Dcmosthfjies—Jfarty, has been leased to Mr, W. Richmond by the executors of the estate <£ tlio late Mr. W. J. Douglas. Early J4wn was bred by tlio late Hon. J. D. Ofmond and sold at tho Karainu disperssl sale for 180 guineas. A I'rian Association telegram from Sydney sUtyes that Mr. Adrian Knox, chairman ol the A.J.C., has temporarily retired from lacing.
