■ t The statement of receipts aud'expenditure for the year ended March 31 submitted with the ftimnciul statement 1 shows at: it glance what many of our civic responsibilities cost nuil Iho relation of'the cost to the revenue derived therefrom. Many of these items can bo picked but so sis to show dearly., the re venae as against the expenditure, but there aro others not 'so clearly defined. Tor instance, under expenditure there is the item city reserves. .£5044 Is. 5d., but thoso reserves- do not include tho Basin Reserve, Jjay's Bay Reserve, the golf links, Kilbirnie Park, Central l'ark, and Ivowto\\n ,Park. If all these places "were placed under tho heading ot <ity ■ reserves, the amount of expenditure would bo nearly doublo that shown for ' "city reserves." The expenditure on tho .various grounds during the last year .was-as follows (whero possible the revenue from tho grounds is shown oppoeite):— Exp. Rov. 4! The municipal, baths pay. During tho year the revenue from-the baths amounted to .£725 83. lid., whilst the expeudituro was -£G<9 lis., lid. During the period under review tho crematorium cost the city .£127 3s. 3d., and only yielded £93 3s. Gd. in.revonue. Public lavatories and bathing sheds are blocked together on.the expenditure ■ side. They cost 10s. lOd. ■ As against this the ■ lavatories earned ,£6SG 9s. Oil. The following account of tho rents received is interesting:— ■C Reclaimed land 30,084 Street widening 6,521 Town Belt J; ■ .G6S Palfiatua 611 Sundry properties ...../ ■ 1,420. . ■ Market Reserve 1,916 . The Market Reserve block/only contains rateable properties at present, viz., the Royal Oak "Hotel and the Turk- - ish Baths. The annual .'payment of the Wellington Gas Company to the city (for the right to fun mains under the streets; amounts to £575. Auctioneers' licenses realised .£915 10s.; .publicans', VG1884; and sundry licenses, •£3839 7s. Id. ! Building fees for tlie year realised '.£lll4 15s. Tlie amount paid to the Government for the control of street traffic by the police' was.
