RECRUITING BOOM IN LOYAL DISTRICTS
IRISH BISHOPS DENOUNCED London, April 21. A telegram from Cork says that tho political atmosphere is electric. Peoplo aro leaving tho largo towns and seeking lodgings in the country. It. is probablo that most of tho colleges and universities will bo closed shortly, to enablo tho students to return to their homes. Tho recruiting rush continues in Ireland, especially in Ulster, and extends to tho south and south-west. The conviction grows that tho application of conscription will rapidly terminate peace, fully, and that the Government is determined to brook no opposition after tho passago of Homo ltule. It is the optimistic belipf in London that tho bishops and priests will take charge of the anti-con-scription movement iu order to prevent extreme measures, and that they will counsel passive resistance and tho exhaustion of every legal means but will havn no rebellion. ' The "Observer" severely criticises tho n;tion of the Irish bishops, and accuses some of them of "desiring a German triumph as a judgment for the French Republic's anti-clerical legislation." Tho present attitude of Ireland, it says, provokes despair on both sides of tho Atlantic of the Irish question and its perversities. , A meeting of 54 Irish members of Parliament at Dublin passed a resolution to remain in Ireland co-operating with their constituents in opposing conscription, which tho resolution declared is ono of the most brutal acts of tyranny and oppression any Government could be guilty of.—Aus.-N.Z.
