CHESS AND DRAUGHTS
•WORKING MEN'S CLUB.
The annual meeting of tho Working Men's Club chess and draughts section was held on Friday, tho vice-president, Mr. Allen Ward, presiding over a huge attendance. The report was adopted unanimously, and it was decided to cooperate witli tho AVatersiders' Club in tho matter of having a tombstone erected at Mr. Erickson's grave. The election of officers resulted as follows-.—President, Mr. E. Mace; vice-president, Mr. A. Ward; lion, secretary, Mr. S. Faulknor; hon. treasurer, Mr. James AA'ilson; official reporter, Mr. F. K. Kelling; match committee for chess, Messrs. Greig, Burgess, Hennessey, and Faulknor; for draughts, Messrs. M'Phorson, Burgess, Coulter, Manson, and Coslello; refereo for chess. Mr. C. W. Tanner (of the Wellington Chess Club); refereo for draughts. Mr. J. Butler (of tho AVatersiders' Draughts Club); consulting members, Messrs. Barnes and Kelling for chess, and Messrs. 'Burgess and H. Douglas for draughts; delegates to Now Zealand Chefs Association, Messrs. H. Arden and S. Faulknor. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to tho retiring hon. secretary, Mr. F. K. Kelling, several- speakers eulogising tho work done by him during the sixteen years that he has held the office, and also his arduous labours in the interests of chess generally throughout New Zealand. It was decided to accept the Ngaio .Chess Club's challongp to plav the Bccond annual niatcli ~at Ngaio. " The matter of arranging tho annual tourneys for 1918 was roferred to the niatcli committees. A. successful meeting closed with the presentation of prizes and the handing of the Staples Cup to Mr. B. J. Barnes, who'holdi this handsonio trophy for tho ensuing twelve months. WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB. This club's annual chamnionship tourney came to a close on Thursday, and was won by G. P. Anderson with the good score of 5 wins 1 loss (to Mr. Pnrehas), and 1 draw (with Mr. A. Clark). Messrs. Purehas, AV'elton, and Harper wero each half a point behind tho winner, and A. Clark was one point behind mm. Mr. G. P. Anderson (who was formerly n prominent player in Bristol, England) thus retains tho championship and Mr. Perrott's trophy for another vear.
