The scow Hazel Repton, which arrived on Tuesday night from Greymouth. had a. rough passage of eleven days, and during the time had to contend with strong northerly winds. On the first nijht at sea the vessel was caught in a northerly gale, which tore away the mainsail. A spare sail was rigged, and although the scow did not experience any further loss of gear she, nevertheless, got a severe handling. ~ . In consequence of tho shipping situation, says a Sydney paper, it, l* anticipated that there will shortly be widesprcid distress among the waterside workers of Sydney, involving well over . a thousand men. For weeks past the outlook has been anything but favourable, and the withdrawal of vessels from the interstate trade will still further aflect the waterside workers Mr. M'lntosh, secretary of the new wharf labourers' union, stated that there is not enough work for tho men at times, and about 800 of the casuals were experiencing 'distress. Of this number about 200 are men that do other odd work, ind do not depend entirely on wharf labouring for a living. The remainder-mostly married men, returned soldiers, and ie.iected volunteersdid not get half enough work.
