MEETING OF COUNCIL. Messrs. C. jr. Luke (president). L. A. Kdwards, J. L\ Atkins, W. .1. Gaudin W. Cotton, H. H. .Miller, H. Miippleljeek', H. 0. Teagle, L. Nelson, 11. H. Hart, and T. Forsyth were present at tho monthly meeting of Hie council of the Central' Chamber of Commerce. The secretary (Air. A. J". Petherick) reported Hint he hod circulated amongst the members copies of the pamphlet' setting out the scope of the Workers' Education Association, referred lo at the previous meeting of tht council. In speaking on this matter, Mr. L. A. Edwards said that in the light of the activo and financial assistance which had been given ' the association by the Conference of Chambers of Commerce, he. considered that the donation of the Central Chamber (J3 25.) should be made an annual one, in which cose a member of the Chamber could be appointed a. delegate to the association. A resolution to that effect was carried. Correspondence from the Petone branch was read. The chief matter concerned was the replies of the Prime. Minister, Minister of Justice, Manager of' Railways, and Manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, respecting the recent temporary shortage of sugar. The Manager of Railways stated in the course of his reply thai the railways could not compete with the steamer.? in regard lo freight rates on sugar. The manager of the Union Steam Sliip Company set out I hat the freight on sugar from Auckland to Wellington was 2fls. per ton, which under present conditions was considered a reasonable charge, and that epecinj arrangements were being made to facilitate the transport of sugar between Auckland and southern ports A. report: was also received from the Lower Ihitt branch. A request from the Palmerston North Chamber that I Ik; Central Chamber should send Ihree delegate lo the district in connection with the visit lo bo paid to Iho Maiignluio licad-wnrks (tho source of the provincial hydro-cleetrio power scheme), on April 21, was received, and arrangements will bo made for the Chamber's representation. A. report, on the present condition of the Wellington Technical School was submit tod to tho Chamber by the Technical School Board, and an appivil was ni.nio fnr assistance in the board's endeavour lo sccu.ro better accommodation for students. Mr. T. Forsyth said Hint in Kebrunry last. a. deputation from tho Technical nnd Education Hoards waited on tho Minister of Education and stressed tho need of immediate, action in providing for a .new school in a suitable locality. The Minister had promised that the matter would hn placed before tho next full meeting of Cabinet and a definite reply would be Riven, but so far they had heard nothing. The. secretary reported that the Chamber had now a. membership of 'iSfi.
