Writing in reply to resolutions passed in regard to increased afforestation, the Prime Minister stated that at the present time operations in this directions had to be limited to what could be done with tho funds that were available after provision had' been made for the ;-lllinportant matters connected with '.he war. Owing to the,scarcity of labour, there had been difficulty in carrying on at the present rate. Soldiers who had returned did not care for the work in the plantations, but it was expected that there would be available after the var more of this class of labour. As regarded restrictions on export, measuie.s bad been taken to hare inserted in tho conditions attached to all new sales a clause that any white pine cut should be disposed of only for the. requirements of this Dominion. The advisability of imposing an export duty on white pine was now being inquired into by (he Efficiency Board, which would shortly submit to hiii its recommendation on the matter. 'From the. foregoing it would be fieen that the Government was fully alivoto the importance for forestry ym\ futiiro timber supplies and was doin? all that was at present possible.
