SPORTS AT TRENTHAM
* HUGE CROSS-COUNTRY RACE. The Thirty-sixth Reinforcements held a sports mei'tmg at Trentham Racecourse yesterday in fine weather, whon somo interesting competitions and races were got off. There was a good sprinkling of civilian garb among the khaki, and the visitors took a keen interest in the soldiers' sports. Among/those present were: Colonel G. M. Gibbon, C.JI.G., Chief of Staff; Colouel H. R, Potter, C.M.G., Camp Commandant; Colonel C. R. iJacdonald, 1.G.5., Chief Infantry Instructor,' Major F. Lampen, D.5.0.; Major F. Waite, D.5.0.; and Captain- A: W. Brocks, M.C. Tho sports started yesterday at halfpast nino in the morning with a competition in platoon drill. The biggest event of all, however, a cross-coiratry race, was held mi Saturday, when 1000 men set off across the hills. The points scored in this contest were counted in yesterday's total of points in the , companies' competition for the most points scored during the day. This points competition was won by C.36 Company with 73 points, the other places being held by D 3G, with 59 points; B 36, 56} points; A 36, 30 points; A 37, 15V points. C 36 will thus hold the Chingford Reinforcements Challenge Cup, presented by Messrs. P. C. and S. D. Neill and C. W. Battray, of Dunedin, until the draft embarks. A cup presented by Colonel Potter was given to the competitor with •the most points to his credit. The officials and committee in charge of the sports were: President, Lieutenant F. O. Bridgeman ;' secretary, Lieutenant F. F. Bennett; committee, Lieutenants F. E. Dorawell (A 36), B. Hutton (B 36), AV. K. Hamilton (C 36), G. S. Salter (D-36), and E. L. Barker (A 37). The prizes and Colonel Potter's cup were presented last night, and the challenge cup will be presented to C Company, 36th Reinforcements, to-day.
