"STEADILY IMPROVING"
CHEERING NEWS FROM THE BATTLEFRQNT STRONG REINFORCEMENTS FOR THE ■ BRITISH LIE Sharp attack on' American : front ' . The cheering news from various sources on the Western battlefront that the situation is steadily improving is an encouraging indication that the supreme crisis of the present bio w on tho British centre is over. Opinion is divided as to whether the 'essening of the. strain is only a prelude to another blow or a happy augury that the British line, now receiving a constant stream of strong reinforcements, is now "set," and able to withstand the onset of the German masses. The balance of opinion favours the latter. One correspondent (Mr. Lovnt Fraser) expects a fresh offensive immediately. Another puts forth the suggestion that a German naval /offensive in the Channel in eupport of their land opera- , tions is possible. The crisis is by no means over, it is said, and many desperate 'battles loom ahead, but one correspondent says with confidence: "Tha,t the second German Mow has definitely failed to break'the British line is, I think, as certain as the failure of the first attempt."
