THE JUGO-SLAVS
SOME TO GO ON. RAILWAY WOKKS.
A statement in regard lo the proposals of the Government in respect of tho employment of Slav 'abour on tlio northern railway and other works v:as made iu tho House yesterday by tho Minister of Publio Works, Mr William I'rasor. Tho Minister said that ho had arranged for the placing of about three hundred Slavs upon, tho Auckland railways. A number of tho Slavs nlso would bo employed at drainage works at various ewarups. Ho ."leo had arranged for a shipment of 3000 tons of rails from Broken Hill, Australia. In speaking to a reporter subsequently the Minister stated that it was proposed to employ about fifty Slavs on the Kai-kohe-Okaihau eectiou, about SO on the Huarau section, 30 or 40 on tho Waiuku line, and tho remainder on the branch line Ixtween Whangarei and the North Auckland Main Trunk line. Hβ proposed, to resume W>rk on tho tunnels on. tho Main Tnrjjk line as soon as possible, and probably a number of Slavs would be employed there. Tho Department's engineers wero now. arranging with Mr. Cullen, tho Jugo-Slav Commissioner, for the drafting of tho men on to tho various works.
