HAIG'S GALL TO THE TROOPS "NO RETIREMENT!"
SPLENDID WORK BY THE ' AIRMEN Sir Douglas Haig has issued an Order of tho Day to his troops, in ■which, while commending their splendid determination and selfsacrifice, he appeals for a supreme effort to stem the enomy offensive. Tho Germans have driven a big salient into tho British line between the Messines Ridge and the la Bassee Canal, but the latest reports indicate that they are held at all points. A semi-official statement points out that it is the last blows that will determine the result of the battle, and adds that General Foch is sparing his men as long as possible in order that their weight may tell eventually with maximum effect. The enemy has renewed his attacks'in the Sommo Valley, but in spite of costly sacrifices has failed completely to advauce his lino in this region. In the clear iveather lately experienced the German aerial forces have suffered very heavy losses, particularly in the north. Turco-German counterattacks in Palestine have been heavily defeated.
