NATIONAL SERVICE
• The House of Representatives spent a good deal of time or. Saturday discussing the proposal of the Government to take the necessary authority to 'ensure that our available man-power shall bo utilised to the best advantage, not only in maintaining our military forces but also ,in connection with' our essential industries. It would seem that there was practically unanimity amongst mombers as to. tho wisdom and necessity of the stop proposed to bo taken. All approved ol the principle of using our shrinking man-power to the best advantage in order to meet the grave difficulties which lie ahead, but one or two of the Labour members wished to safeguard the proposal so as to ensure that advantage would not be taken of tho powers conferred to benefit private individuals. It was made quite clear that the whole purpose- of the schemo is to conserve and promote tho national interests, and that anything that was done would be done for the benefit of the community as a wholo and not for the advantage of any individual, but although this was generally recognised and accepted tho Labour members were difficult to satisfy on the point. As a result of the discussion the matter has now been held over until the sitting of the House to-day. It is right that proper safeguards should be provided, and this the Government is quite, prepared to do, but it may be hoped that Ministers and members will resist any attempts at obstruction arid Bee that the session does not end without this very important addition made to our war legislation. _ It is an essential part of any practical scheme for tho promotion of war-time national efficiency, and in view of the turn events have taken on the Went front it must bo treated as a measure of urgent necessity.
