Stray Loaves. Tha posthumous novel by William do Morgan,' to which I referred last weok, is said to bo a characteristically "Do Morganisli" story, entitled /'The Old jlad House." The book was only two chapters short of completion when Mr. do Morgan died, and as ho left ample notes, liis widow has been able to coin-, plote it. : T'he'De Nobel Prize for Literature for 1917- has been awarded to a Danisli author; ■ Dr. K. Gjcllerup. English translations of two of his best stories, "Minna" and " "The Pilgrim Kamaliita," were published somo years ago by Heinemanns. . . Three more volumes havo been added to Messrß. "VVilliams and Norgate's excellent cheap edition of the writings of Dr. L. P. Jacks— I "The Country Air," "All Men' Aro Ghosts," and "Among the Idolmakers." Dr. Jaoks's books are gradually becoming better known to New Zealand readers, and I am glad to.see.an increasing number of them in tho bookshops. ' " ; ... Mr. Thomas Burke's stories of London Chinatown; "Limehouse Nights," have had a largo salo in. San Francisco, which, of course,, having a Chinatown of its own, takes a special interest in Mr. Burke's grim, stories. Years ago the late Prank Norris, of "The Pit" fame, wrote some stories of the 'Frisco Asiatic quarters, which, in their own way,'were quite as weirdly realistic as those of Mr. Burke.
